Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program
What is FSS?
The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program is voluntary 5-year incentive program administered by the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA). The FSS program is open to families participating in the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) and Public Housing programs.
After enrollment, each participant meets with the FSS coordinator who assists in developing a five (5) year training and services plan (ITSP). The head of household as well as any adult members over the age of 18 in the household that wish to participate, will work with the FSS Coordinator to establish a list of obtainable personal, professional and financial goals. During your contract you are responsible for attending workshops and training sessions that are geared towards giving you a hand-up and not a hand-out.
The FSS program allows Section 8 and Public Housing residents to accrue money in an escrow account as their earned income increases, assisting residents in becoming less dependent on government subsidies. Any increases in the family’s rent as a result of increased earned income during the family’s participation in the program results in a credit (money) to the family’s escrow account.
In other words, the difference between what your rent was and is after your increase will be placed into a savings account for the purposes of helping you with your 5 Year COME-UP!
